Brown named coach at Tennessee Tech

Dec 10, 2006 - 6:48 AM BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Ticker) - Watson Brown has decided to head home.

Brown resigned as coach at Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday after a 3-9 season and returned to his hometown to become the coach at Tennessee Tech.

Brown, a Cookeville, Tennessee native, replaces Mike Hennigan, who resigned because of health reasons after 10 seasons as coach of the Golden Eagles.

Brown was introduced as coach later in the day Saturday during a men's and women's basketball doubleheader in the Eblen Center on the Tennessee Tech campus.

"We're excited to be coming home to Cookeville. It's a great time for us at Tennessee Tech," Brown said. "The time is right and this is a great opportunity to make a quick move and really improve the Golden Eagle football program to the point where we can win conference championships and make a run at a national championship."

Brown was 62-74 in 12 seasons at UAB. He has a career record of 94-151 that includes stops at Cincinnati, Rice and Vanderbilt.

"Coach Watson Brown has resigned as head football coach at UAB. I, and the entire UAB community, appreciate his hard work and efforts in establishing our program in Division I football," school president Carol Garrison said.
