Charges retire Junior Seau's number at memorial service
May 12, 2012 - 5:24 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Chargers retired Junior Seau's number during a public memorial service for the former star on Friday.The 12-time Pro Bowler committed suicide on May 2.
"There is only one Junior and only one number 55, and from tonight forward the number-55 Chargers jersey will always say 'Seau.' It is officially retired," said Chargers president Dean Spanos.
Thousands gathered at Qualcomm Stadium for the "Celebration of Life."
"His legacy includes his remarkable foundation, which has donated millions to causes that help children and young adults. Junior spent time with other teams near the end of his career, but all of us will always remember him as a San Diego Charger," San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders said.
