Eagles boot McBriar, sign Jones

Mar 25, 2013 - 5:11 PM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Eagles made a change in their kicking game on Monday, releasing punter Mat McBriar and agreeing to terms with punter Donnie Jones.

McBriar, who was signed to a one-year pact by the Birds last July, averaged 46.5 yards per kick on 55 punts in 13 games last season.

Prior to that, he'd spent the past eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and posted a net average of 38.4 yards per punt.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, the 33-year-old Australian native led the league in punting average in both 2006 and 2010.

"Jones has one of the strongest legs in the entire NFL and we're excited we had a chance to sign him," said Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. "McBriar battled back from a tough injury situation to punt very well last year. We wish Mat and his family all the best."

Jones is entering his 10th pro season, having been taken by the Seattle Seahawks out of LSU in the seventh round of the 2004 draft.

The 32-year-old punted the ball 88 times for an average of 47.2 yards per punt, with no blocks and only one returned for a score in 16 games with the Houston Texans.

Over 134 games with Seattle, Miami, St. Louis and Houston, Jones has averaged 45.6 yards per kick.
