San Diego Chargers 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 1:26 PM (Sports Network) -1 (11) - D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama; 2 (38) - Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame; 3 (76) Keenan Allen, WR, California; 5 (145) - Steve Williams, CB, California; 6 (179) - Tourek Williams, DE, Florida International; 7 (221) - Brad Sorensen, QB, Southern Utah
Top Picks Analysis: The Chargers' offensive line was abysmal in 2012 and D.J. Fluker was the best O-Line prospect left on the board when San Diego picked at No. 11 overall. It was probably a little too early for general manger Tom Telesco to take him but Philip Rivers is certainly happy. Telesco then traded up in the second round and got great value with Notre Dame inside linebacker Manti Te'o, a great college player who fell because of his strange "catfishing" scandal. Te'o was never going to be a top-10 pick as some surmised early in the process due to some athletic limitations, but he put far too much good football on film to pretend he can't play at the next level. Allen is another college superstar who fell because of poor 40 times but he might be the most polished receiver in this class.
Best Value Pick: Allen finished his 2012 season regarded as the best wide receiver in the draft but his 40 times sent him tumbling. If you like him, he's Anquan Boldin. If you don't, he doesn't have the speed to get consistent separation. The film says you should like him.
Questionable Calls: There shouldn't be any hesitation with Te'o as a football player but bringing him into any locker room has to be questioned, simply because his behavior during the scandal turned out to be so bizarre.
Summary: Fluker was as good a desperation pick as you could make but there were far better players on the board at No. 11. Te'o and Allen are good fits for what Mike McCoy is building. Te'o figures to fit in nicely next to rangy playmaker Donald Butler in the 3-4, while Allen should be an impact possession receiver for new offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt.
