Kansas City Chiefs 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 4:18 PM (Sports Network) -1 (1) - Eric Fisher, OT Central Michigan; 3 (63) - Travis Kelce, TE, Cincinnati; 3 (96) - Knile Davis, RB, Arkansas; 4 (99) - Nico Johnson, ILB, Alabama; 5 (134) - Sanders Commings, CB, Georgia; 6 (170) - Eric Kush, OC, California (PA); 6 (204) - Braden Wilson, FB, Kansas State; 7 (207) - Mike Catapano, DE, Princeton
Top Picks Analysis: The Chiefs chose the ceiling over the floor, taking Fisher over the presumptive favorite to go No. 1 overall, Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel. Joeckel, also a left tackle, was the far safer pick and ended up going No. 2 to Jacksonville. Fisher's advantage in athleticism, however, was enough to convince new Chiefs coach Andy Reid and his hand-picked general manager, John Dorsey, that the CMU star was the best option. The Chiefs then snared the talented but troubled Kelce with the first pick in the third round. Reid coached Travis' brother Jason in Philadelphia and believes he can get the most out of a kid who is more of an old school in-line type in that he can block and catch the ball. Davis is dynamic but coming off a down year after sitting out all of 2011 due to injury.
Best Value Pick: Johnson is an assignment-sure, selfless beast of a middle linebacker between the tackles who doesn't mind blowing up lead blocks so his teammates can grab the glory and clean things up.
Questionable Calls: Davis is just not consistent enough when on the field and has injury concerns to boot so it was more than questionable when Kansas City called his name on the second day.
Summary: If Fisher is truly can't miss, this will work out just fine in the end but Reid and Dorsey looked a little overmatched overall. The book on Reid in his final years in Philly was that the game was slowly passing him by. His first draft in K.C. won't do anything to dismiss those concerns.
