Indianapolis Colts 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 1:38 PM (Sports Network) -1 (24) - Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State; 3 (86) - Hugh Thornton, OG, Illinois; 4 (121) - Khaled Holmes, OC, USC; 5 (139) - DT - Montari Hughes, DT, Tennessee-Martin; 6 (192) - John Boyett, SS (Oregon); 7 (230) - Kerwynn Williams, RB, Utah State; 7 (254) - Justice Cunningham, TE, South Carolina
Top Picks Analysis: Werner was once thought of as a top-10 guy until questions about his closing speed off the edge sent him tumbling and the Colts were more than happy to gobble up the high-energy Florida State product, who figures to be a key cog moving forward. Thornton is more of an overachieving, grinder who needs to be more consistent with his technique.
Best Value Pick: Fifth-rounder Hughes is a very talented but raw size-speed prospect, who could really develop as a space-eater with sound and patient coaching.
Questionable Calls: Taking Thornton in the third round was a bit of a reach but it was obvious general manager Ryan Grigson wanted to address the interior of the offensive line and didn't have a second-round pick. Holmes was a better option in Round 4.
Summary: Grigson had a spectacular first draft in Indianapolis, netting six different players who played in 12 or more games, including star quarterback Andrew Luck. This wasn't as sexy but he gave coach Chuck Pagano two key pieces for the 3-4 and netted bodies for competition on the offensive line.
FINAL GRADE: B
Undrafted rookie free agent signings: Boston College OT Emmett Cleary; Alabama A&M OL Jamaal Johnson-Webb; Marian College K Michael Josifovsk; Temple K Brandon McManus; Montana State FB Dan Moore; Baylor WR Lanear Sampson; San Jose State CB Daxton Swanson
