Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 4:02 PM (Sports Network) -2 (43) - Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State; 2 (73) - Mike Glennon, QB, North Carolina State; 4 (100) - Akeem Spence, DT, Illinois; 4 (126) - William Gholston, DE, Michigan State; 5 (147) - Steven Means, DE, Buffalo; 6 (189) - Mike James, RB, Miami
Top Picks Analysis: You think cornerback was a need in Tampa? General manager Mark Domenik pulled the trigger on the Darrelle Revis trade before the draft, giving up his first-round selection to the New York Jets for the best corner in football when healthy. The Bucs then supplemented that in the second round by getting a very lengthy corner in Mississippi State's Banks, a player who would have had a first-round grade if he had a little more speed. Quarterback Josh Freeman was put on notice with the selection of Glennon, a strong-armed accurate passer.
Best Value Pick: Glennon looks like a clone of Joe Flacco and we know how well that worked out in Baltimore. It's pretty clear coach Greg Schiano isn't sold on Freeman, so getting the North Carolina State product as insurance was a solid move.
Questionable Calls: Spence is a big strong player who stands out in the weight room but that strength has never translated all that well to the field because he doesn't play with much leverage.
Summary: Dominik's maneuvering resulted in a new pair of cornerbacks and a backup quarterback with upside. The work to bolster the depth on the defensive line, specifically Spence and Gholston, didn't stand out, however.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Undrafted rookie free agent signings: Wyoming OL Nick Carlson; Arizona State CB Deveron Carr; Northern Michigan OT Jace Daniels; Mount Union WR Chris Denton; Pitt TE Hubie Graham; Temple RB Montel Harris; USF TE Evan Landi; Miami OL Jeremy Lewis; Purdue QB Robert Marve; Northern Illinois CB Rashaan Melvin; Arizona State OT Brice Schawb; Purdue RB Akrem Shavers; Georgia CB Branden Smith; Georgia Tech RB Orwin Smith; UMass OT Nick Speller; Arizona FB Taimi Tutogi; Arkansas DE/LB Tenarius Wright; Rutgers WR Tim Wright
