New York Giants 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 4:57 PM (Sports Network) -1 (19) - Justin Pugh, OL, Syracuse; 2 (49) - Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State; 3 (81) - Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M; 4 (110) - Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse; 5 (152) - Cooper Taylor, S, Richmond; 7 (225) - Eric Herman, OG, Ohio; 7 (253) - Michael Cox, RB, UMass
Top Picks Analysis: General manager Jerry Reese and head coach Tom Coughlin have been together for a decade and have an excellent working relationship that has resulted in a lot of success. That said, the Giants reached for Pugh with the 19th overall pick. The former Syracuse star is a versatile player who they will want to play tackle, something his frame just isn't cut out for. Hankins was a much better fit in the second round as a natural run-stuffer. He'll need to control his weight, however. Moore was once thought of as a first-round talent early in the process but wasn't quite the athlete most thought when he starting testing.
Best Value Pick: When the Giants were winning Super Bowls, it was usually because of Eli Manning along with their pass rush. New York needs to replenish the rush after a down season. Osi Umenyiora is now in Atlanta, Justin Tuck has seen his better days and Jason Pierre-Paul was closer to ordinary than J.J. Watt a season ago. Getting a pass rusher with upside like Moore in the third round is solid stuff.
Questionable Calls: Most teams need backup quarterbacks but Eli Manning hasn't missed a snap in forever so Nassib is not likely to be utilized any time soon.
Summary: There were some solid situational picks after Pugh, who will probably settle in as a solid guard only after failing outside. Hankins is a much- needed, run-stuffing interior player, and Moore will provide more juice than the descending Umenyiora did in 2012. Also watch out for Taylor. He's raw but huge for a safety with the speed to turn into something if he picks up the mental aspect.
FINAL GRADE: B-
Undrafted rookie free agent signings: LSU TE Chase Clement; Ohio State LB Etienne Sabino; Virginia Tech S Alonzo Tweedy
