Atlanta Falcons 2013 NFL Draft Review
Apr 29, 2013 - 6:59 PM (Sports Network) -1 (22) - Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington; 2 (60) - Robert Alford, CB, SE Louisiana; 4 (127) - Malliciah Goodman, DE, Clemson; 4 (133) - Levine Toilolo, TE, Stanford; 5 (153) - Stansly Maponga, DE, TCU; 7 (243) - Kemal Ishmael, DB, Central Florida; 7 (244) - Zeke Motta, SS, Notre Dame; 7 (249) Sean Renfree, QB, Duke
Top Picks Analysis: The Falcons and general manager Thomas Dimitroff were intent on rebuilding the cornerback position after releasing Dunta Robinson and losing Brent Grimes in free agency to Miami. Atlanta moved past Minnesota in the first round to nab Trufant and supplemented that by selecting Alford in the second. Trufant has prototypical NFL size and athleticism along with quick feet, while Alford is smaller but flashes excellent closing speed.
Best Value Pick: Toilolo was overshadowed at Stanford by Zach Ertz but he projects as a solid tight end in his own right and could be the replacement for Tony Gonzalez in a year or two. At 6-foot-8 and 260 pounds, Toilolo is a massive player who has great leaping ability and could be a huge red zone threat down the line.
Questionable Calls: Alford is not all that good in press coverage and has a hard time in run support so he may turn out to be a one-dimensional player for Atlanta.
Summary: Dimitroff replenished his secondary, added a possible heir to Gonzalez, and took a flyer on some defensive line depth by selecting Goodman and Maponga. A sold, if unspectacular haul in Dixie.
