Redskins agree to deal with top pick Amerson
May 17, 2013 - 9:33 PM Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins announced the signing of cornerback David Amerson, the team's highest selection in last month's NFL Draft, on Friday. The Redskins took Amerson, who led the nation with 13 interceptions as a sophomore at North Carolina State in 2011, with the 19th pick (51st overall) of the second round. The team did not have a first-rounder as part of last year's trade with St. Louis that enabled Washington to land reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 overall draft of the 2012 draft.
Amerson won the Jack Tatum Award honoring the top defensive back in college football following his sophomore campaign with the Wolfpack, and set a school record with 18 career interceptions before declaring for the draft as an early entry.
The Redskins also signed their fourth-round pick, Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas, on Friday. The 24-year-old led all of FBS with eight interceptions last season en route to earning first team All-American and Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Washington now has six of its seven 2013 draft choices under contract, with Florida tight end Jordan Reed (3rd Round) the lone member of the class yet to sign.
No one has shouted yet.
