Bills hold troubled Dareus out of OTAs
Jun 3, 2014 - 8:53 PM Orchard Park, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The Buffalo Bills announced Tuesday that defensive tackle Marcell Dareus will not participate in the remainder of the team's offseason training activities following a second arrest in the last month. The decision comes after the 2013 Pro Bowl selection was arraigned on three misdemeanor charges stemming from an alleged drag race that caused his 2012 Jaguar to crash into a tree last week.
Earlier this offseason, Dareus was cited for felony possession of a controlled substance after being pulled over for speeding in his native Alabama.
Head coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday that Dareus will return to the field for the Bills' mandatory minicamp, which begins June 17.
"I've been working with him, he's dealing with a lot of personal issues, too," said Marrone. "I spoke with him at length. We spent a lot of time together talking about a lot of things. As of now, he's not going to be attending the OTAs but he will be attending the mandatory minicamp when we come back."
Dareus was not injured in the recent accident, which according to the Buffalo News also involved teammate Jerry Hughes. He was arraigned Monday in the Buffalo suburb of Hamburg on charges of reckless driving, second degree reckless endangerment and for participating in an illegal speed contest.
The Buffalo News reported that Hughes is being investigated by Hamburg police for his possible role in the incident but has yet to be charged. Marrone told reporters Tuesday he does know the identity of the second driver, but declined to offer specifics while citing legal reasons.
Dareus, the third overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, tallied career bests of 71 tackles and 7 1/2 sacks last season and has recorded 18 1/2 sacks over 48 games with the Bills.
