Patriots keep QB Mallett

Aug 30, 2014 - 9:29 PM Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Mallett is still a member of the New England Patriots.

Mallett wasn't among the 19 players waived or released as the Patriots reduced their roster to the 53-man limit on Saturday.

One of the most intriguing battles this summer was the one between Mallett and rookie Jimmy Garoppolo to be Tom Brady's backup. As of right now, New England will go with three quarterbacks on its active roster.

Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy and wide receiver Josh Boyce were notable players to be cut by the club.

The Patriots acquired Worthy, a former second-round draft pick, from Green Bay earlier this month. He played in only two games last season as he recovered from a torn ACL.

Boyce was drafted by New England in the fourth round last year.

The Patriots also waived defensive linemen Jake Bequette, Eathyn Manumaleuna and L.T. Tuipulotu, linebackers Steve Beauharnais, Ja'Gared Davis and Taylor McCuller, safeties Kanorris Davis and Shamiel Gary, running backs Jonas Gray and Roy Finch, offensive linemen Braxston Cave, Jon Halapio and Chris Martin, tight end Steve Maneri, wide receiver Jeremy Gallon, defensive back Daxton Swanson and long snapper Danny Aiken.

Rookie linebacker James Morris was placed on injured reserve.
