Griffin's ankle not broken, no IR; Jackson day-to-day

Sep 15, 2014 - 7:36 PM Ashburn, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden said quarterback Robert Griffin III does not have a fractured ankle and will avoid the season-ending injured reserve list, for now, while wide receiver DeSean Jackson will be day-to-day with a sprained shoulder.

Griffin suffered a dislocated left ankle during the first quarter of Sunday's game against Jacksonville, but further tests on Monday showed the ankle was not broken.

Gruden said he does not have a timeline for Griffin's return, but indicated that it could be some time this season.

"It's not a fracture and we'll put a cast on it and see how it goes from there," said Gruden. "We don't know how long it will be."

Jackson, meanwhile, suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder while trying to haul in a pass from Griffin's replacement, Kirk Cousins, late in the first quarter. Jackson immediately clutched his left shoulder and left the field under his own power.

Gruden said Jackson's status for next Sunday's game against his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, would be determined on how he deals with the pain.

"He'll be day-to-day," added Gruden. "We'll have a good idea Thursday or Friday how he is."

The Redskins flourished offensively under Cousins, rolling to a 41-10 win over the Jaguars.

"Our game plan is our game plan, and nothing will change, really," said Gruden about Cousins taking over as the starter in Griffin's absence.

Colt McCoy will be the backup for Cousins and Gruden added that the Redskins might still add a quarterback to the roster.
