Redskins QB Campbell out vs. Giants

Dec 7, 2007 - 11:35 PM ASHBURN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell had an MRI on his injured knee and will miss next week's game against the New York Giants, the team announced on Friday.

The Redskins did not address any further games that Campbell might miss.

Campbell, who suffered a dislocated knee cap in the Redskins' 24-16 win over the Chicago Bears on Thursday, will not require surgery on the joint.

"Jason went and got an MRI this morning because he displaced his knee cap," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said. "First, they wanted to look at the MRI and make sure there were no chips and stuff that came off with it. It looks like we are OK from that standpoint.

"I am guessing - now don't hold me to this - that there will be no surgery. It will be a matter of that getting healed up. We are thankful that it was no worse than what it was."

With 2:59 left in the second quarter, as he completed a short pass to running back Ladell Betts, Campbell was tackled by Chicago defensive end Mark Anderson, who fell on the quarterback along with several others.

"It was one of those times where you don't want to look at it and your knee cap is sitting on the side of your knee," Campbell said. "It took them two times to pop it back into place."

The third-year quarterback was taken off the field on a cart.

Gibbs wasn't sure how long Campbell would be out of action.

"We just got all the information back and it will be a while for the doctors to get a chance to look at everything and give us the best guess of how long it will be before he can play," Gibbs said. "That is still in the works. It will be a matter of him healing up and being able to get back over that. We have not gotten to a point where we can say how long."

Campbell, who has thrown for 2,700 yards and 12 touchdown passes in 13 games this season, did not rule himself out for the entire season.

"I'm not going to rule myself out of anything," Campbell said. "I'm always going to stay positive about anything. The one thing you don't want to do is be ignorant about it. I want to be smart. So I'll take it as a week to week thing, and day to day. It's hard to say right now, the day after."
