Cast off Volek returns to Tennessee

Dec 8, 2007 - 9:43 PM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - A year after being cast off by the Tennessee Titans, Billy Volek returns to Nashville on Sunday as a member of the San Diego Chargers.

The Titans traded Volek the Chargers in September 2006, a move that prompted a war of words between the backup quarterback and Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher.

Following the trade, Volek claimed he hadn't been given a fair shake with the Titans, who last season handed the starting job to first-round draft pick Vince Young and signed veteran Kerry Collins.

In response to Volek's claims, Fisher simply said "the biggest distraction is no longer with us."

"That's water under the bridge," Volek told The Tennessean this week. "What happened happened. I still don't completely understand it, but it's water underneath the bridge. Tennessee and that organization were great to me for 6 1/2 years. I'm grateful for the time I had there."

Fisher told the newspaper he hasn't talked to Volek since the trade and that it "remains to be seen" whether he will talk with Volek on Sunday.

"Billy has moved on," Fisher said. "He has a career with the Chargers in a backup role. It is no different now than when he left. I wish him well."

Volek, who was signed by the Titans in 2000 as an undrafted free agent, has yet to take a snap this season as the backup to Philip Rivers.

"I'm excited to go back and see some of my old teammates, see the old coaching staff," Volek said. "Tennessee was always a great place for me."
