Chargers QB Rivers undergoes surgery

Jan 23, 2008 - 10:21 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers underwent surgery to repair a torn right ACL, the team announced Wednesday.

Rivers' rehab is expected to last four to six months, putting him on track to return in time for training camp.

The Chargers initially reported that Rivers suffered a partial tear in the 28-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoffs on January 13.

The injury, however, turned out to be more serious, as Rivers suffered a full tear of the ligament.

After being doubtful for most of the week, Rivers started in Sunday's 21-12 loss to the New England Patriots, completing 19-of-37 passes for 211 yards and two interceptions.

The Chargers moved the ball well against the unbeaten Patriots, gaining 311 yards, but they had to settle for four field goals.

Rivers also revealed that he underwent an arthroscopic procedure the day after the Chargers' win over the Colts to clean out some loose cartilage in the knee.
