Chargers re-sign QB Volek

Mar 1, 2008 - 1:41 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Chargers are keeping Billy Volek in a key supporting role.

The Chargers on Friday signed Volek - the team's backup quarterback - to a three-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed for Volek, who was an unrestricted free agent but chose to remain with San Diego.

Volek, who attempted just 10 passes during the regular season, showed his value to the Chargers during the playoffs.

With starter Philip Rivers knocked out of the game with a knee injury, Volek led an eight-play, 78-yard drive, scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a quarterback sneak with 4:50 to play in a 28-24 upset of the Indianapolis Colts.

"We are very excited to have Billy back," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "It gives us continuity at the quarterback position. He is always prepared and ready. With his talent, experience and command of our offense, it's just a great feeling to know he is in the wings."

In eight NFL seasons, Volek has started 10 games - all with the Tennessee Titans. An undrafted free agent out of Fresno State, the 31-year-old has appeared in six games since joining the Chargers in a trade in October 2006.
