Patriots re-sign Gaffney

Mar 5, 2008 - 5:41 PM FOXBOROOUGH, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- The New England Patriots locked up another one of their receivers on Wednesday, signing six-year veteran Jabar Gaffney, who joined the team in 2006.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The move comes two days after the Patriots inked Randy Moss to a three-year contract worth $27 million.

Gaffney, 27, has played in 91 games with the Houston Texans and Patriots, catching 218 passes for 2,600 yards and 13 touchdowns.

"Jabar is a good fit for our offense," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "He has been a versatile and dependable player who steps up in whatever role is asked of him."

The 6-1, 200-pound University of Florida product was signed by the Patriots as a free agent on October 6, 2006. He has played in 27 games with New England, starting 13.

Last season, he played in all 16 contests - with seven starts - grabbing 36 passes for 449 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

Gaffney played well down the stretch, giving the potent Patriots an additional weapon alongside their top two receivers in Moss and Wes Welker.

Gaffney caught 24 of his 36 passes in the final seven games of the season, ranking third on the team during that span behind Welker(51) and Moss (42).
