Cowboys S Hamlin signs extension

Jul 15, 2008 - 6:45 PM IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- The Dallas Cowboys finally have secured the long-term services of Pro Bowl safety Ken Hamlin.

The Cowboys and Hamlin agreed to terms Tuesday on a six-year contract worth $39 million, ending a prolonged negotiation process involving Dallas' franchise player.

According to the Cowboys' official web site, Hamlin's deal also includes $15 million in guaranteed money.

The deadline for teams to reach long-term agreements with franchise players is 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday afternoon. If franchise players do not sign by the deadline, they cannot sign multi-year contracts until after the season.

Hamlin, 27, enjoyed an outstanding 2007 campaign after signing as a free agent with Dallas. The Memphis native finished with 62 tackles and career highs of five interceptions and 15 pass deflections en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance.

The 6-2 Hamlin has appeared in 70 games over parts of five seasons with the Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks, recording 360 tackles, four sacks and 13 interceptions.
