Eagles CB Samuel injures hamstring

Jul 27, 2008 - 4:43 AM BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (Ticker) -- Philadelphia Eagles star cornerback Asante Samuel left Saturday morning's practice with a strained right hamstring.

Samuel, who signed a six-year contract worth $57 million to join the Eagles this past offseason, suffered the injury during seven-on-seven drills.

"He felt better once he got inside," Eagles head coach Andy Reid said. He'll probably have an MRI tomorrow. It was more positive after he left."

Samuel, 27, also suffered a left hamstring injury during last month's organized team activities. But the All Pro strained his other hamstring Saturday.

The 5-10 Samuel has emerged as one of the league's top cover cornerbacks over the last five years as a member of the New England Patriots, who have won two championships in that span.

A fourth-round draft selection in 2003, Samuel recorded 44 tackles and six interceptions last season for the Patriots, who won their first 18 games before losing to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII.
