OXNARD, California (Ticker) -- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will miss at least three weeks with a slight groin strain, the team announced on Tuesday.
Newman, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, suffered the injury in practice on Monday. Newman was injured when he became tangled with a receiver during a play and his leg twisted awkwardly. He had an MRI on Tuesday, which revealed the strain.
The Cowboys' best cover corner, Newman missed the final three games of the preseason and first two games of the regular season with a slight tear in the tissue in the base of his right foot.
Newman will miss the Cowboys' preseason opener vs. San Diego on August 9, and may also miss the August 16 matchup vs. Denver.
"We're a little disappointed because he plays the nickel for us, he really needs working at it," Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said. "We had some specific things we thought we could help him with, so it's going to slow down that process. But he'll just have to study those three weeks."
The fifth overall pick in 2003, Newman had 50 tackles and tied a career-high with four interceptions in 13 games last season, including one returned for a touchdown.
The partially reinstated Adam "Pacman" Jones worked in Newman's spot with the first-team defense on Tuesday. The injury also means more reps for rookie Mike Jenkins. The Cowboys drafted Jenkins with their second first-round pick, 25th overall.
