ALLEN PARK, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Lions signed journeyman quarterback Drew Henson on Friday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, according to the team's website.
Detroit opted to sign the former University of Michigan standout after second-year quarterback Drew Stanton sprained the thumb on his throwing hand in practice on Thursday.
Henson, 28, is perhaps best known for sharing quarterback duty at Michigan with Tom Brady before taking a short hiatus from football for professional baseball. After struggling for three seasons as a third baseman in the New York Yankees' organization, the Houston Texans drafted him in the sixth round of the 2003 draft.
Despite spending time with Houston, Dallas and the Minnesota Vikings, Henson has appeared in only seven NFL games - all with the Cowboys during the 2004 season - when he went 10-for-18 for 78 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
To make room for Henson on the roster, the Lions released wide receiver Eric Fowler.
