Cowboys WR Hurd ruled out of season opener
Aug 29, 2008 - 10:07 PM IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd has a high left ankle sprain and will miss the season opener against the Cleveland Browns on September 7.The Cowboys have not set a timetable for Hurd's return, the team said Friday on its web site.
Unless Isaiah Stanback's injured shoulder makes significant progress in the next week, the Cowboys have just two healthy receivers who played in an NFL game last year - Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton.
Reserve wideout Miles Austin, the Cowboys' top kick returner who is suffering from a lingering knee injury, is not expected to return in time for Week One.
Danny Amendola and Mike Jefferson made their final case for roster spots Thursday night, combining for five catches.
Hurd, 23, recorded 19 receptions for 314 yards and one touchdown in 16 games last season for the Cowboys.
