METAIRIE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- The injury bug once again has bitten Jeremy Shockey, who is headed to the operating table just three games into his stint with the New Orleans Saints.

Shockey will undergo sports hernia surgery this week and will be sidelined three to six weeks, the Saints confirmed Monday.

It marks the latest injury for Shockey, who joined the Saints this past offseason via a trade with the New York Giants. The Pro Bowl tight end suffered a broken leg in Week 15 last season and was sidelined during New York's entire postseason run.

Shockey had been bothered by the injury for several weeks despite playing in New Orleans' first three games. He had 16 catches for 151 yards for the Saints (1-2), who already are without injured wide receiver Marques Colston.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Shockey had a falling out with the Giants after spending his first six seasons in New York. He played in New York's first 14 games last year before breaking his left fibula against the Washington Redskins.

The Giants turned to then-rookie Kevin Boss, whose emergence in the postseason made Shockey expendable. The brash Shockey was traded to New Orleans on July 21 for a pair of draft picks.

Shockey, 28, was expected to thrive in New Orleans' high-powered attack led by quarterback Drew Brees. But now Shockey will join Colston, who is recovering a torn ligament in his thumb, on the injured list.

A first-round draft selection in 2002, Shockey has 387 catches for 4,379 yards and 27 touchdowns in 86 career games. The Oklahoma native has never played a full 16-game season in his career, which repeatedly has been plagued by nagging injuries.
