GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was limited to handing off in practice Wednesday.

Rodgers, who suffered a sprained shoulder in Sunday's 31-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had been expected to throw, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy admitted that plan may have been a "little ambitious."

"We're going to not throw him in practice today and tomorrow. He will be re-examined again on Friday morning," McCarthy said. "He's gotten better each day in rehab. He's very positive and feels like he's improving, and I'm going to give him every chance, every possible chance, to play in the game against Atlanta."

Rodgers suffered the injury while scrambling for a seven-yard gain with about five minutes remaining in the third quarter Sunday. He remained in the game and tossed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on Green Bay's next possession.

McCarthy said rookie Matt Flynn will start against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday if Rodgers is unable to go. Flynn finished up for an ailing Rodgers last weekend.

Rodgers, 24, has gotten off to a solid start in his first season as the heir apparent to Brett Favre. Through four games, he has passed for 961 yards and six touchdowns.

A former first-round draft selection, Rodgers had not thrown an interception prior to Sunday's loss, when he was sacked three times and threw three interceptions.
