BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman has a sports hernia and could miss a minimum of six weeks, according to a report posted Thursday on ESPN.com.

Citing a source close to Newman, the web site reports the Cowboys have forwarded results of his MRI and other medical tests to Philadelphia-based specialist Dr. William Meyers to determine if surgery is necessary.

If the test results are confirmed, Newman will have surgery immediately and miss at least six weeks.

Meyers has performed sports hernia surgery on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb and Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill.

Newman on Wednesday was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals with an abdominal strain, after missing last week's 31-22 win over the Cincinnati Bengals due to what was considered a groin injury.

"It had been painful, but it wasn't something in those first two games where I felt I was really hurting myself," Newman told ESPN.com. "It was kind of a dull pain, not something that affected me a whole lot. But last week, it really hurt and I couldn't open up and run and that's why I didn't play."

Coming off his first Pro Bowl selection, Newman has nine tackles in three games this season and will likely be replaced by Adam Jones, who is back in the headlines following an altercation with his personal bodyguard late Tuesday night at the Joule Hotel in downtown Dallas.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported on Wednesday that Jones was attending a party hosted by rapper Ludacris and got into a fight with bodyguard Tommy Jones, damaging a bathroom in the process. Police were eventually called, but reportedly no arrests were made.

The 25-year-old cornerback was just reinstated on August 26 by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell following a one-year suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. He has a history of legal problems - including six arrests - since entering the league as a first-round draft choice of the Tennessee Titans in 2005.

Since joining the Cowboys in an April 23 trade, Jones had managed to stay out of trouble. He has been a major contributor in the secondary, leading the club with 11 pass deflections.
