IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will be out four to six weeks after having surgery to repair a sports hernia, the team announced on Friday.
Newman had the surgery after flying to North Carolina to consult with Dr. William Meyers, who is considered the top sports hernia specialist in the country.
Newman missed last week's 31-22 win over the Cincinnati Bengals due to a lingering groin injury, which eventually became a sports hernia. He was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday with what was termed an abdominal strain.
The Cowboys' top cover corner, Newman will likely return for the November 16 matchup against the rival Washington Redskins.
Newman, who is coming off his first Pro Bowl selection, suffered the groin injury in the first week of training camp and missed the entire preseason as well as the season-opening win over the Cleveland Browns.
The sixth-year veteran has nine tackles in three games this season. He will likely be replaced by Adam Jones, who is back in the headlines following an altercation with his personal bodyguard late Tuesday night at the Joule Hotel in downtown Dallas.
The league is reviewing the incident, but Jones will play against Arizona after the Cowboys decided the situation did not merit punishment.
The 25-year-old Jones was fully reinstated six weeks ago following a 17-month ban for violating the league's personal conduct code. He leads the Cowboys with 11 pass deflections.
