METAIRIE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush missed Wednesday's practice due to swelling in his left knee.

Saints coach Sean Payton told reporters that Bush has been dealing with the injury throughout the season and that the team has attempted to lighten the star tailback's workload.

According to Payton, Bush could possibly miss Thursday's practice as well. But the 23-year-old Bush is not expected to miss Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Bush has rushed for a team-leading 239 yards this season and leads the NFL with eight total touchdowns, including three on punt returns.

The Saints (3-3) received good news regarding wide receiver Marques Colston and tight end Jeremy Shockey, who both were limited participants in Wedneday's practice.

Colston, who has been nursing a thumb injury for the last six weeks, likely will play Sunday against the Panthers (4-2). Shockey has been recovering from sports hernia surgery, but Payton is optimistic that the four-time Pro Bowler also will be in the lineup this week.

"They are doing well," Payton said. "They practiced (Wednesday). Last week we were close, but this has been the week we were shooting for. I ??m hopeful we'll have both of them."
