BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones avoided a trial, but couldn't escape a suspension from the NFL, according to a report.
Jones, who avoided a trial on a felony charge of cocaine possession by agreeing to a drug intervention program, was suspended three games by the league, according to ESPN.com.
The web site reported that Jones was informed of his suspension by way of a letter.
The 25-year-old was was arrested July 10 after Fayetteville police say they saw him using a credit card to cut up cocaine in a parked sports-utility vehicle.
Facing a possible sentence of three to 10 years and a $10,000 fine, Jones was set to go to trial but instead agreed to enter Washington County Drug Court.
Under the agreement, Jones must complete a nine-month program that includes 136 hours of group therapy and 30 hours of community service. He also must submit to at least 78 random drug tests.
If the former Arkansas quarterback completes the program, the charge will be dismissed. If not, the trial will go forward.
Jones has 30 catches for 338 yards and a touchdown.
