Broncos CB Champ Bailey out 4-6 weeks with torn groin

Oct 22, 2008 - 3:58 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The news continues to get worse for the Denver Broncos. Already reeling from Monday's 41-7 loss to the New England Patriots, the Broncos have lost Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey to a torn groin.

According to multiple reports, Bailey will miss four-to-six weeks with the injury, which he suffered during the second quarter on Monday. The 6-foot veteran was covering Patriots wideout Randy Moss on a deep pattern and pulled up lame after making a cut. He hobbled off the field and into the locker room and did not return.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, he underwent an MRI on Tuesday that confirmed the severity of the injury.

The newspaper - as well as CBS4, a television station in Denver - also reported that his brother, linebacker Boss Bailey, will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered on Monday that will require microfracture surgery.

Champ Bailey, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection largely considered the league's top cover cornerback, has 28 tackles, one interception and three pass deflections this season. Since being drafted seventh overall by the Washington Redskins in 1999, he has missed just three games.

Champ Bailey has 43 interceptions - including four returned for touchdowns - 155 pass deflections and 677 tackles in 148 career games.

The Broncos were hit hard by injuries in the loss. In addition to the losses of both Bailey brothers, starting quarterback Jay Cutler injured his right index finger, though he remained in the game.
