ASHBURN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor underwent a procedure Monday to repair a nagging calf injury.
Redskins coach Jim Zorn said Taylor had the procedure to lance the muscle open and "wash out" the injury. He likely will be sidelined for next Monday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"There is swelling, and the problem with it is that there is so much swelling that makes it hard to close the wound," Zorn said. "We are going to give him a rest - it is likely that he won't play in this football game. Hopefully the bye week will help."
Zorn said cornerback Shawn Springs also will sit out the game against the Steelers due to a calf strain. Springs already has missed four games this season, including the last two.
"In the MRI, it still shows some damage in the calf muscle. It was a pretty big strain," Zorn said.
It is the second surgical procedure Taylor has undergone on the calf. The six-time Pro Bowler initially suffered the injury when he was kicked in the calf against the Arizona Cardinals on September 21.
Taylor missed two games following a surgical procedure on September 22 to drain a mass of blood near his ankle.
The 12-year veteran left the Redskins' practice facility Friday to have the calf examined and played sparingly in Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.
Acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins on July 20, Taylor has one sack this season, giving him 118 for his career.
