49ers TE Davis scores in first game after being benched
Nov 11, 2008 - 3:26 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Vernon Davis proved that he could do more for the San Francisco 49ers by being on the field Monday night. The tight end, who was benched in a highly publicized altercation on October 26, caught a first-half touchdown during San Francisco's game with the Arizona Cardinals on Monday.
After committing a personal foul penalty in the fourth quarter of the 49ers' 34-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Davis was benched and told to go back to the locker room by 49ers interim coach Mike Singletary.
When Singletary was asked about what he said to Davis, the coach said, "I told him that he would do a better job for us right now taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than going out on the field."
On Monday, the 24-year-old Davis hauled in an 18-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone - while surrounded by three defenders - to give the 49ers a 21-13 lead with 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Singletary embraced his tight end on the sideline after the play, although Davis was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct after he removed his helmet on the field.
No one has shouted yet.
