Jets sign CB Law

Nov 11, 2008 - 9:22 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Jets will have the Law on their side for Thursday's AFC East showdown against the New England Patriots.

The Jets signed veteran cornerback Ty Law on Tuesday, two days before they face the Patriots with first place on the line in the AFC East. The teams are tied for the top spot in the division with 6-3 records.

"I think I made the right decision overall," said Law, who previously played with the Jets in 2005. "They made me feel good about coming back because I was real close to going elsewhere, but it's a good situation to reunite with (Jets coach) Eric (Mangini)."

Law played in New England from 1995 to 2004, helping the Patriots win Super Bowls in 2001 and 2003. He also got a Super Bowl ring in 2004, but saw action in only seven games that season.

During Law's latter seasons in New England, Mangini was an assistant under Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

The 34-year-old Law spent the previous two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He recorded 47 tackles and two interceptions in 2007.

"Ty can play inside," Mangini said. "Ty can play outside. I've used him a little bit as a safety in the past. That flexibility going forward is going to be very important."

Although Law will have only one day to prepare, he expects to play Thursday against his former team.

"It was (definitely good timing) and it's all part of the challenge to play against your former team," Law said. "You get one day to go out there and prepare and really test your mental body. I don't think it is going to be so much physical as it is going to be mental when you go out there."
