Report: Browns courting Bill Cowher

Nov 21, 2008 - 9:43 AM Citing Profootballtalk.com, MSNBC reported on Thursday that former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher has been approached about the possibility of coaching the Cleveland Browns.

The report said a source indicated the Browns are willing to offer Cowher a contract worth between $8-9 million per season.

Cleveland currently is 4-6 under coach Romeo Crennel.

Cowher has a history with Cleveland. He played with the old Browns - now the Baltimore Ravens - from 1980-82 and was their special teams coach from 1985-86. He then shifted to the role of defensive backs coach from 1987-88.

Currently a studio analyst with CBS, Cowher took over for Chuck Noll as Pittsburgh's coach in 1992.

In his 15 seasons with the team, the Steelers captured eight division titles and 10 playoff berths, advanced to six AFC championship games and made two Super Bowl appearances. He led Pittsburgh to a victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.
