Jaguars CB Mathis out for season

Dec 3, 2008 - 4:59 PM JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Ticker) - The Jacksonville Jaguars season continued to spiral down the drain Wednesday.

Coach Jack Del Rio announced that cornerback Rashean Mathis will be placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Mathis does not need surgery, but with the Jaguars (4-8) out of the playoff picture, Del Rio said shutting him down was the best course of action.

The 10th Jacksonville player to be placed on IR this season, Mathis suffered the injury in the second quarter of Monday night's 30-17 loss to Houston.

Mathis was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2006, but suffered a serious quadriceps injury preparing for that game and has not been the same player since. He finishes with 40 tackles this season and currently leads the team with four interceptions.

Drayton Florence is expected to replace him.
