Father of Patriots QB Cassel dies
Dec 11, 2008 - 12:37 AM BOSTON (Ticker) - Greg Cassel, the father of New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel, has died, a league source confirmed to the Boston Globe on Wednesday.Matt Cassel planned to return home Wednesday and, though the Patriots are playing at nearby Oakland this Sunday, his availability for this weekend is unclear.
"Well, it's bigger than football," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Cassel's situation. "I have been through that during the season as well. It's a personal situation that you just have to deal with. As I said, our thoughts and prayers are with him."
Greg and Barbara Cassel divorced in 1996, and Matt Cassel and his three siblings were raised by his mother.
The Patriots are practicing at San Jose State this week. The team traveled from Seattle to San Jose on Sunday following a 24-21 victory over the Seahawks.
