49ers coach Singletary won't say if Martz will return

Dec 27, 2008 - 7:12 AM SANTA CLARA, California (Ticker) -- San Francisco 49ers interim coach Mike Singletary on Friday remained noncommittal when asked if offensive coordinator Mike Martz would remain with the team next season.

Singletary, who has posted a 4-4 record since taking the helm of the 49ers (6-9) this season, instead focused his attention on Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins (8-7).

"I just really want to focus on Washington and everything else will take care of itself. It will happen soon enough," Singletary said.

When asked if he had discussed future plans with Martz, Singletary was equally as short.

"Very little, we talked a little bit about it but no big deal."

Under Martz, the 49ers have gone from last in total offense to 24th this season. His style, however, does not appear to be in line with Singletary's conservative philosophy.

Singletary will be named the 49ers head coach and receive a multi-year contract as early as next week, according to The Sacramento Bee.

Citing a source close to the situation, the Bee reported that the 49ers will officially offer the deal to Singletary following the season finale.
