49ers RB Gore upgraded to probable for Sunday's game

Dec 27, 2008 - 2:55 PM SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore will likely see some playing time in Sunday's season finale against the Washington Redskins.

Gore has missed the 49ers last two games due to a sprained left ankle, suffered during a 24-14 win over the New York Jets on December 7.

The 2006 Pro Bowl selection has been practicing this week, however, and the 49ers updated his status to "probable" on Friday.

Gore, who has run for six touchdowns in 13 games this season, is 22 yards away from becoming the first San Francisco player to amass 1,000 rushing yards in three consecutive seasons.

While admitting that Gore is "looking good" in practice, 49ers' interim head coach Mike Singletary said the milestone is secondary to the health of his player.

"I don't want him to re-injure anything trying to get 1,000 yards," said Singletary, who is expected to have the interim tag removed from his title as early as Monday. "Hopefully he can do it, but if he can't, I want him to be smart and look at the longevity of the decision."

The 49ers (6-9) have won three of their last four games and are 4-4 since Singletary replaced the fired Mike Nolan.
