Report: Favre doesn't need major shoulder surgery

Dec 30, 2008 - 8:26 PM BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Brett Favre does not need major surgery to repair his injured right shoulder, according to a report posted Tuesday by ESPN.com.

A source told the web site that Favre has been suffering from a biceps tear and calcification in his shoulder area, meaning the New York Jets quarterback likely would need arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury.

Favre, who underwent an MRI on the shoulder Monday, likely will spend the upcoming months mulling his future. The three-time league MVP has not stated whether he will return for a 19th season or if he will retire - again.

Favre struggled down the stretch in his first season with the Jets, who lost four of their final five games en route to a 9-7 finish. The Pro Bowl quarterback threw nine of his league-leading 22 interceptions over the final five games.
