Report: 'Pacman' involved in another incident, cut by Cowboys

Jan 8, 2009 - 1:29 AM IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- The ill-fated "Pacman" Jones experiment is over in Dallas.

The Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday announced the release of the controversial cornerback, whose brief tenure with the team was marred by a suspension, poor play and a neck injury. Now, a new incident has come to light that may have forced the team's hand.

According to a report Wednesday on ESPN.com, the Cowboys made the move after new allegations emerged against Jones stemming from a 2007 incident, while he was still a member of the Tennessee Titans.

"Outside the Lines" reporter John Barr reportedly contacted the NFL and the Cowboys on Wednesday about a segment that is set to air on Sunday, during which three men allege that Jones arranged a shooting outside an Atlanta-area strip club in June 2007 - two months after he had already been suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

One of the men said that he had an altercation with Jones inside the club. After he left with the two others, their car was hit with gunfire.

The team said the move will be made official on February 9, the first day NFL clubs are allowed to make waiver requests.

Jones, who was acquired from the Titans in the offseason, was suspended for the entire 2007 season by Goodell for repeated run-ins with the law.

In February 2007, Jones was involved in a melee at a Las Vegas strip club that ended in the shooting of three people and left one man paralyzed.

Goodell reinstated Jones on the eve of the 2008 regular season following a 17-month suspension, but it took the cornerback just seven weeks to find trouble again.

Jones was involved in an alcohol-related scuffle with one of his bodyguards at a Dallas hotel. The bodyguard was part of a security team hired by the Cowboys to keep Jones out of trouble.

Since alcohol was involved in the October incident, Jones' actions violated terms of his previous reinstatement. Goodell decided to suspend Jones for a minimum of four games and reinstated him following the Week 11 win over Washington.

As soon as he returned to the playing field, Jones was hurt in the first quarter of the 20-13 loss at Pittsburgh on December 7 when several players fell on him after he muffed a punt in the first quarter.

There were reports that the injury could be career-threatening, but Jones played in a season-ending 44-6 loss at Philadelphia.

Jones has a history of legal problems - including six arrests - since entering the league as a first-round draft choice of Tennessee in 2005.
