Bruins C Savard, LW Lucic leave game

Feb 27, 2009 - 6:45 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- Boston Bruins center Marc Savard and left wing Milan Lucic suffered upper body injuries during the second period of Thursday's 6-0 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks.

As a precaution, coach Claude Julien elected to keep both players off the ice in the third period of the lopsided contest.

With the game no longer in doubt, Anaheim's Mike Brown punched Lucic in the face. The 20-year-old Lucic responded by taking down Brown and repeatedly pummeling his adversary in the back of the head while he was on the ice.

"I didn't know where the refs were, but it's kind of tough to defend yourself when you're on the ice with someone on top of you," Brown said. "That's why I was saying if he wanted to fight, I could've gotten up and we could've went at it. It's hard to defend yourself or do anything when you're on the ice."

"I guess he got a cheap shot and that's what sets him off," Julien said of Lucic.

Anaheim defenseman Sheldon Brookbank came in to break up the fight and drew a third-man in penalty, which brought Savard into the fray. Savard dropped the gloves 44 seconds later after he was repeatedly cross-checked by blue-liner Scott Niedermayer.
