CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Cedric Benson made the most of his second chance with Cincinnati, re-signing with the Bengals on Tuesday.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the Cincinnati Enquirer reported it was for two years and $7 million.
Benson, who was signed by the Bengals in late September, rushed for 747 yards and two touchdowns on 214 carries, finishing the season with two 100-yard efforts.
"Cedric was a great addition for us last year," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "And we're looking to see him pick up right where he left off."
Benson's career seemingly was on the rocks following his release from the Chicago Bears last spring after a pair of alcohol-related arrests.
In a storied college career at Texas, Benson, 26, was the fifth back in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons.
But the No. 4 overall pick in the 2005 draft never lived up to the promise expected of him with Chicago, failing to reach 1,000 yards rushing in his three seasons there. He played in 35 games for the Bears, starting 12.
Benson, a 5-11, 220-pounder, was revived with the lowly Bengals, averaging 154.0 yards from scrimmage in the final three games.
"Cedric was recognized as an elite talent coming out of college," Lewis said. "His years in Chicago weren't what he hoped for, but he was able to give us a lift on the field and be a great presence in the locker room. He earned everyone's respect, and we're excited to let him continue to grow in our system."
In 47 career games, Benson has rushed for 2,340 yards and 12 touchdowns.
