Chargers sign WR Hakim, place WR Floyd on IR

Dec 14, 2006 - 9:23 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The playoff-bound San Diego Chargers added a wide receiver with postseason experience in Az-Zahir Hakim.

Hakim, who played with the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowls XXXIV and XXXVI, signed with the Chargers on Thursday.

San Diego (11-2) needed a receiver to replace Malcolm Floyd, who will miss the rest of the season and the playoffs with an ankle injury. Floyd was placed on injured reserve Thursday.

"Az provides the Chargers with valuable depth at receiver as well as punt and kickoff returner," Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said. "He also brings a wealth of experience in both regular season and postseason play."

Eric Parker and Keenan McCardell start at receiver for the AFC West champions. Floyd was the fifth receiver behind backups Vincent Jackson and Kasim Osgood.

A veteran of eight-plus seasons, Hakim had 17 catches for 147 yards in six games with the Detroit Lions this season before being released.

The 5-10 Hakim has 316 receptions for 4,191 yards and 28 touchdowns in 110 career games with the Lions, New Orleans Saints and Rams. He also returned 165 punts for 1,773 yards and three touchdowns.

Floyd caught 15 passes for 210 yards and three scores in 12 games this season.
