Leetch was last defenseman with 100-point season
Nov 4, 2009 - 1:14 AM TORONTO(AP) -- Brian Leetch thinks it'll take another offensive surge before a defenseman has 100 points in a season again.Leetch, who will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday, had 102 points for the New York Rangers in 1991-92. He's the last defenseman to reach the century mark.
In a conference call, Leetch congratulated Washington's Mike Green for getting 73 points in 68 games last season, but said it'll take a forward tallying "150 or 160 points" before a defenseman can reach 100 again.
Leetch was ninth in NHL scoring the season he topped 100, the same season Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux led the way with 131 points in 64 games.
Leetch played 1,205 regular-season games and had 247 goals and 781 assists for 1,028 points.
