Flyers sign G Biron to two-year extension

Mar 27, 2007 - 3:41 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- A month after acquiring goaltender Martin Biron, the Philadelphia Flyers made the gamble pay off.

Biron, who was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent in July, signed a two-year contract extension with the Flyers on Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Flyers acquired Biron from the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round pick just before the February 27 trade deadline.

"We are extremely pleased to get this done," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "Marty has come in and played well and we look for him to be a solid goaltender for us for the next two years."

Biron, 29, is 4-5-1 with a 2.96 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 10 games with the Flyers. He went 12-4-1 with a 3.04 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage in 19 games with the Sabres.

Biron ranks second on the Sabres' all-time list in shutouts (18) and third in wins (134) and games played (300). He lost his starting job to Ryan Miller last season.

Drafted 16th overall in 1995, Biron owns a 138-120-30 record with a 2.55 GAA and .910 save percentage in 310 career games.
