Shero takes home GM award

Jun 14, 2013 - 10:57 PM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh's Ray Shero won the NHL's General Manager of the Year award on Friday.

Shero made some of the biggest deals during the season that helped the Penguins to the top seed in the Eastern Conference. He acquired Jarome Iginla from Calgary, Brenden Morrow from Dallas and Jussi Jokinen from Carolina in deals leading up to the trade deadline.

The Penguins advanced to the conference finals, but fell short of making the Stanley Cup Finals after getting swept by Boston.

"It's a great honor," Shero said. "It's not something you set out to do. Any general manager's mandate is to place the best team possible and have a successful franchise, running that accordingly.

"It's a great honor, but it's a reflection of our ownership group, our coaching staff led by Dan Bylsma, my assistants, Jason Botterill. I'm very proud of it and happy to accept that."

Also nominated for the award were Montreal's Marc Bergevin and Bob Murray of Anaheim.
