Bruins to host Canadiens in 2016 Winter Classic
Jan 24, 2015 - 6:41 PM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Another heated rivalry will be featured in the 2016 Winter Classic, as the NHL announced Saturday that the Boston Bruins will host the Montreal Canadiens in the next edition of the outdoor showcase. The longtime enemies will play next Jan. 1 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the 68,756-seat home of the NFL's New England Patriots.
Boston will become the first team to host the Winter Classic twice. The Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers played the 2010 contest at Fenway Park.
Montreal, meanwhile, has yet to play in the league's featured event and will become just the second Canadian team to take part. The Toronto Maple Leafs played the Detroit Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in 2014.
The Bruins and Canadiens are two of the NHL's Original Six teams and have a storied history that includes last spring's seven-game playoff series won by Montreal.
Also Saturday, the NHL announced two other outdoor games for next season as part of the league's "Stadium Series."
On Feb. 21, 2016, the Minnesota Wild will host the Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota. Six days later, the Red Wings will visit the Colorado Avalanche at Coors Field in Denver, home of the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball.
Minnesota and Colorado will take part in an outdoor game for the first time, while the Blackhawks and Red Wings have each played in the Winter Classic twice. Chicago played at Washington in this year's Winter Classic.
