Coors Field to host Avs-Red Wings in 2015-16
Jan 24, 2015 - 7:56 PM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Avalanche will host the Detroit Red Wings at Coors Field in February of 2016, the team and the NHL announced Friday.The game, part of the league's Stadium Series initiative, will take place at the home of the Colorado Rockies on Feb. 27, 2016.
It will be the first-ever outdoor event involving the Avalanche, who will be in their 20th season in Colorado since the franchise relocated from Quebec.
"This is a great day for our organization and our fans," said Avalanche executive vice president/general manager Joe Sakic. "Playing in an outdoor game will be an amazing experience for everyone. To have this game in the state of Colorado, in a terrific venue like Coors Field, is something we are truly looking forward to."
The Red Wings have participated in the New Year's Day Winter Classic twice previously, having hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in the 2014 edition and having faced the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field back in 2009.
