Report: Gerber set to start Senators' opener

Sep 29, 2007 - 5:50 PM TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators apparently will be relying on Martin Gerber for their season opener.

According to a report by TSN of Canada on Saturday, Gerber will be the Senators' starting goaltender in their 2007-08 season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Gerber will start in place of Ray Emery, who still is recovering from offseason wrist surgery. Emery, who helped Ottawa to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, has seen just 40 minutes of action during the preseason.

An eighth-round pick of Anaheim in 2001, Gerber was a member of Carolina's Stanley Cup championship team in 2005-06 before signing a three-year, $11.1 million contract with Ottawa. As a backup, the Swiss netminder went 15-9-3 with one shutout and a 2.78 goals-against average last campaign.

In 143 career games with the Ducks, Hurricanes and Senators, Gerber owns a 70-46-16 record with seven shutouts, a 2.54 GAA and a .912 save percentage.
