Flyers dip into college ranks for new head coach

May 18, 2015 - 3:53 PM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers have dipped into the college ranks for their new head coach, naming North Dakota's Dave Hakstol to the position on Monday.

Hakstol spent the past 11 seasons at North Dakota, compiling a record of 289-143-43 with a .654 winning percentage in 475 games. He led the school to the Frozen Four seven times during his tenure, including this past season.

"Dave brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Philadelphia Flyers organization," said Flyers general manager Ron Hextall on Monday. "He's a proven winner and we are pleased to have him become part of the Flyers family."

The Flyers needed a replacement for Craig Berube, who was fired last month after two seasons. Berube was named to the post in October 2013 after Peter Laviolette was fired just three games into the 2013-14 season and guided the Flyers to a record of 75-58-28 during his tenure.

Hakstol has no NHL experience and played five seasons in the International Hockey League from 1991-96, but has a link to the Flyers. He coached Hextall's son, Brett, at North Dakota.

"I am extremely excited to be named the Philadelphia Flyers new head coach," said the 46-year-old Hakstol. "Through the process here with Ron (Hextall) and everybody in the Flyers organization I have gained even more of an understanding of the history and tradition of this organization and I'm very proud to become part of the Philadelphia Flyers today."

Hakstol's program produced 20 NHL players, including Stanley Cup winners Jonathan Toews of Chicago and Matt Greene of Los Angeles.
